2010 World Cosplay Summit (PIX)

I coverered the 2010 World Cosplay Summit for RAN magazine and The Japan Times.

This past weekend, the biggest event for lovers of anime and manga hit Nagoya, the 2010 World Cosplay Summit, sponsored by TV Aichi.

The "World Cosplay Summit" was created to promote international exchange through the Japanese youth culture of manga and anime.
The free and dynamic nature of manga was instrumental in the birth of cosplay. Nowadays youth from around the world find this as a common language and a dynamic new form of global interaction. The World Cosplay Summit began in Osu, Nagoya and has grown to include 15 countries from around the world. If you count audience and participants at each preliminary event, the number of people involved is now in the 100s of thousands.

For youth who have discovered Japan through manga and experienced Japanese culture through the medium of the World Cosplay Summit, we endeavor to continue the development of this new form of international exchange.

Expect a full write up in RANmagazine next issue, but we've got pix and vid right here for you, starting with the pix I took at the events.  Check the goods below...

Coming next-- VIDEO of the competition!

Just damn--"The Last Airbender SUX!" according to Roger Ebert

This is about as bright as "The Last Airbender" gets.

The Last Airbender

BY ROGER EBERT / June 30, 2010

Cast & Credits
Aang Noah Ringer
Prince Zuko Dev Patel
Katara Nicola Peltz
Sokka Jackson Rathbone
Uncle Iroh Shaun Toub
Zhao Aasif Mandvi
Fire Lord Ozai Cliff Curtis

Paramount Pictures presents a film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Running time: 103 minutes. Rated PG (for fantasy action violence).

"The Last Airbender" is an agonizing experience in every category I can think of and others still waiting to be invented. The laws of chance suggest that something should have gone right. Not here. It puts a nail in the coffin of low-rent 3D, but it will need a lot more coffins than that.

Let's start with the 3D, which was added as an afterthought to a 2D movie. Not only is it unexploited, unnecessary and hardly noticeable, but it's a disaster even if you like 3D. M. Night Shyamalan's retrofit produces the drabbest, darkest, dingiest movie of any sort I've seen in years. You know something is wrong when the screen is filled with flames that have the vibrancy of faded Polaroids. It's a known fact that 3D causes a measurable decrease in perceived brightness, but "Airbender" looks like it was filmed with a dirty sheet over the lens.

Now for the movie itself. The first fatal decision was to make a live-action film out of material that was born to be anime. The animation of the Nickelodeon TV series drew on the bright colors and "clear line" style of such masters as Miyazaki, and was a pleasure to observe. It's in the very nature of animation to make absurd visual sights more plausible.

Since "Airbender" involves the human manipulation of the forces of air, earth, water and fire, there is hardly an event that can be rendered plausibly in live action. That said, its special effects are atrocious. The first time the waterbender Katara summons a globe of water, which then splashes (offscreen) on her brother Sokka, he doesn't even get wet. Firebenders' flames don't seem to really burn, and so on.

The story takes place in the future, after Man has devastated the planet and survives in the form of beings with magical powers allowing them to influence earth, water and fire. These warring factions are held in uneasy harmony by the Avatar, but the Avatar has disappeared, and Earth lives in a state of constant turmoil caused by the warlike Firebenders.

Our teenage heroes Katara and Sokka discover a child frozen in the ice. This is Aang (Noah Ringer), and they come to suspect he may be the Avatar, or Last Airbender. Perhaps he can bring harmony and quell the violent Firebenders. This plot is incomprehensible, apart from the helpful orientation that we like Katara, Sokka and Aang and are therefore against their enemies.

The dialogue is couched in unspeakable quasi-medieval formalities; the characters are so portentous they seem to have been trained for grade school historical pageants. Their dialogue is functional and action-driven. There is little conviction that any of this might be real even in their minds. All of the benders in the movie appear only in terms of their attributes and functions, and contain no personality.

Potentially interesting details are botched. Consider the great iron ships of the Firebenders. These show potential as Steampunk, but are never caressed for their intricacies. Consider the detail Miyazaki lavished on Howl's Moving Castle. Trying sampling a Nickelodeon clip from the original show to glimpse the look that might have been.

After the miscalculation of making the movie as live action, there remained the challenge of casting it. Shyamalan has failed. His first inexplicable mistake was to change the races of the leading characters; on television Aang was clearly Asian, and so were Katara and Sokka, with perhaps Mongolian and Inuit genes. Here they're all whites. This casting makes no sense because (1) It's a distraction for fans of the hugely popular TV series, and (2) all three actors are pretty bad. I don't say they're untalented, I say they've been poorly served by Shyamalan and the script. They are bland, stiff, awkward and unconvincing. Little Aang reminds me of Wallace Shawn as a child. This is not a bad thing (he should only grow into Shawn's shoes), but doesn't the role require little Andre, not little Wally?

As the villain, Shyamalan has cast Cliff Curtis as Fire Lord Ozai and Dev Patel (the hero of "Slumdog Millionaire") as his son Prince Zuko. This is all wrong. In material at this melodramaticlevel, you need teeth-gnashers, not leading men. Indeed, all of the acting seems inexplicably muted. I've been an admirer of many of Shyamalan's films, but action and liveliness are not his strong points. I fear he takes the theology of the Bending universe seriously.

As "The Last Airbender" bores and alienates its audiences, consider the opportunities missed here. (1) This material should have become an A-list animated film. (2) It was a blunder jumping aboard the 3D bandwagon with phony 3D retro-fitted to a 2D film. (3) If it had to be live action, better special effects artists should have been found. It's not as if films like "2012" and "Knowing" didn't contain "real life" illusions as spectacular as anything called for in "The Last Airbender."

I close with the hope that the title proves prophetic.

I had been anticipating seeing this movie for the last 3 years... Since I found out my beloved animated series wold become a live-action summer blockbuster... And EVERY SINGLE review I've seen is BAD, BAD, BAD.... Well there's another hope dashed in as many days... Damn.

Where am I going to get my BLEACH fix now?

Crap. As y'all know, I live here in Japan, home of the best stuff on TV, Anime. My favorite anime for the past 4 years, Bleach, is shown here on TV Aichi at 6pm every Tuesday... But when I can't make it to the TV at that time, I count on DB to hook up a fansub and stick it on the interwebs in tasty torrented goodness... I also managed to stack a good 12 gig worth of all 273 episodes to date. Can I count on crunchyroll to give me the great subbing I count on here every week??

below is via dattebayo.com

Crunchyroll Does Not Force DB to Drop Bleach

2010/06/07

As most of you are probably aware, Crunchyroll has recently acquired the rights to simulcast Bleach. As we previously stated, DB will therefore be dropping the project. We will release one more episode so that our staff can say goodbye to one of our favorite shows, and so we can conclude the project with having subbed 225 total episodes of Bleach. This means that Bleach 274 will be DB's last episode of Bleach.

Please note that Crunchyroll did not in any way force, coerce, recommend, or suggest that we drop Bleach. DB has in fact not had any communication directly with Crunchyroll regarding this issue or any other. We are dropping Bleach because we support legal alternatives to fansubs and we hope you will too. As with Naruto, the best way to make sure this service is giving you what you want is to give it a chance and then send your feedback to Crunchyroll and to Viz, preferably framed in as polite as a way as you can manage so they might actually listen to you.

Japan gets awesome Space Battleship Yamato model

RT: @GaijinPot @dannychoo This is nice. Think they can make a chromed Eva-00 with a Rei Ayanami to go with it?

yamato

Space Battleship Yamato is the name of a (rather short-lived) Japanese science fiction anime series that was aired on TV in countries other than Nippon some 20 to 30 years ago (outside Japan the anime and the movie versions are also known as Star Blazers or Space Cruiser Yamato). And now, the series’ very cool, eponymous spaceship gets a very pretty model version [JP].

yamato2

The 1/350 Battleship Yamato scale model is made by Bandai, coated with silver color and looks just awesome. Users get a remote control with which they can make the ship “shoot” or activate the rear engine (you hear cannon shots and see blinking LEDs). The model itself is sized at 766×220×102mm and weighs 1,950g (including the stand). Bandai throws in a bunch of figures (the heroes of the anime) and a set of mini fighter jets, too.

yamato3

In Japan, Bandai is already accepting pre-orders and will start shipping the first Battleship models to buyers starting from the end of December. The beauty isn’t cheap though: $850. If you’re interested but live outside Japan, ask the Japan Trend Shop or Geek Stuff 4 U if they can buy one for you.

Mou Nihon ni kaeritai:The Real Folk Blues

One reason I learned Japanese in the first place was because I wanted to read manga and watch anime in their original and uncut forms, and get the small nuances that make up Japanese humor and drama that can never be translated effectively.

This song, The Real Folk Blues is one example. It's the ending theme to Cowboy Bebop, an anime made in 1998, that I got to see on this side that same year thanx to my good friend Koh. Every time I hear this song, it reminds me to try harder and push through the sadness. The song does have some emotionally powerful lyrics, but the music itself can transmit that; it is blues after all, and that is the same language anywhere. Its sentimental for me because its the first song I think I understood in Japanese, and I used to play it a lot on the Kintetsu and Hankyu Densha (trains in Japan) in my headphones whenever I was having a bad time in Japan. One of my friends there heard me playing it, and got me the entire Cowboy Bebop soundtrack double CD. It was also my ringtone on my keitai (cellphone).

This is the actual live concert of the band The Seatbelts. The chick with the Native American headdress on keyboards is Yoko Kanno, the lead composer of the band. I wonder if she's taken... And that's Mai Yamane doing the singing. I am in love with her voice.

Enjoy.

Densha Otoko (Train Guys)

natsukashi naaaaa.. I was there this time last year, and like the last 6 years, I'll be there again for sometime this year. Never ceases to amaze me how people can have fun and do things in public that us paranoid Yanks call out the nat'l guard, SWAT, Bomb Squad, etc for... I soooo miss being over there everytime someone calls the police for things like LED battery-operated signs with cartoon characters flippin the bird.. F this place.
