From Hanzi Smatter 一知半解: "Me Pervert"

"Me Pervert"

Hi. I'm from Israel. Love your blog.

The story goes like this: I study Japanese for several years now, and I can read about 1400 kanji more or less. One day, my co-worker approaches me with his cellphone. "Can you tell me what this says?" he asks me, showing me a photo of a piece of fabric carrying the kanji 私変態. I take a look, and reply "It's not grammatical, but it basically says "I'm a pervert".

"What?!"

"'I'm a pervert'. The first character means 'I', the other two mean 'pervert'", where did you get that from, anyway?

"It's on my 1.5 years old daughter's shirt!"

After LOLing for about 15 minutes straight, I kind of demanded that he get me a photo of the complete shirt so I can send it to Hanzi Smatter. And here is the shirt, complete with the cute, luckless 1.5 years old "hentai" herself.

I mean, yes, I have seen intentionally-made "hentai" shirts around the web (and on Hanzi Smatter). Adults buy them and wear them for the laughs. But who in his right mind would put this on a toddler's shirt, and sell it in a children's clothing store rather than a joke shop? I can't imagine.

Yes, I suppose it *could* mean "metamorphosis", but really, outside scientific contexts, it's almost always means "pervert". Or am I wrong?

Cheers,
Herouth

Cute kid, though. The "bunny" or whatever kind of cute animal that is also on the shirt is a nice touch. We have obviously uncovered a diabolical plot to "pervert" innocent youth with inappropriate hanzi!

By the way, the T-shirt would be cuter and better if it was grammatically correct, like:

私、変態なんです。[I ... am a pervert.]
私、変態かも…[I might be a pervert...]

As it is, it sounds more like Tarzan-speak: "me - pervert." You kind of expect "you - Jane" next.

Actually the term "hentai" was once solely used in a technical sense by psycologists to label a personality "different and prone to sexual addictions" from that of the norm. It's only after the scandals in the '70s involving several "upstanding members of the community" got published by Japan's famous "loose-writing" (and gotta-be-some-kinda-shade-of-yellow) journalism community, did the term 変態 come to be known by the wider public-at-large.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/変態 --
In Japanese the word hentai is a kanji compound of 変 (hen meaning "change" "weird" or "strange") and 態 (tai meaning "attitude" or "appearance"). The term is used as a shortened form of the phrase 変態性欲 (hentai seiyoku), or "sexual perversion". In slang, 変態 (hentai) is used as an insult meaning roughly "pervert" or "weirdo".

Bump n Grind... At Coco Ichiban?!

Video ThumbSo I sit down to a hot bowl of curry soup and rice at the local Coco 壱番屋, a large chain of restaraunts in Japan where the specialty is curry and rice with whatever you want on it. I love curry so I end up here maybe once a week. This particular one here in Motoyama always has some old '90s urban playlist on the PA system though. Last week they played Kriss Kross AND Tevin Campbell... Today, a lil' R Kelly. Wonder if Kells is seein some royalty paper from the airtime he gets over here... And more importantly, I more Japanese people knew English, there's no way they'd play this in public.

Celebrating 32 years of being a Mad Genius!
Maybe you don't know, but my birthday lasts for a WEEK. I was born August 25th, 1977-- but because I'm a summer baby, most people have vacation during my birthday--including me. I spent my birthday week at the beach, at an onsen, at a temple, in an old Japanese village, in the club, and most of all-- on the street drinking BEER with my friends!! Thanx to all that hung out with me on my day,and to all that see the pix.

Location: Aichi, Mie, Osaka, Nara, JAPAN!!

Mr S gets his super song on!

Because Mr. S had the coolest song when I was 4 years old. I'm surprised there isn't a Lil' Wayne/Manny Fresh remix of this somewhere.

More Scinergy Memorial Day Wierdness

poor stephen! we've folded him into a sleeper couch, taped him up inside a box, locked him in various closets and trunks. but we've never shrink-wrapped him to a pole... happy memorial day from the scinergy GA crew!

Remember the object of Memorial Day is to honor our veterans and others that sacrificed to make our country what it is today. And there's nothing like the freedom of hanging out with your friends and sharing a laugh! God Bless America, your country, your family and Mother Earth!

Fakin' The Funk 1: Fake-ass Disneyland in China!

I'm starting a new column here in the blog called "Fakin' the Funk". Whenever I run across something that's a bad representation of the original, be it tangible or intangible, It'll go here.

We're gonna start this show off right-- Here's a fake-ass Disneyland in China, which has long been the "knock-off" capital of the world anyway.

From The Standard we learn that Beijing's state-owned Shijingshan Amusement Park boasts the slogan "Disneyland is too far" and "features a replica of Cinderella's Castle, with staff dressed like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and other Disney characters." Here's a quote from a 31-year-old housewife and mother at the park that nicely sums up the situation:

"I don't understand why that is such a big problem. Shouldn't others be able to use those characters besides [Disney]?" she asks.

Japan Probe offers us this gem:

Some have claimed that the park is illegally copying Disney’s Minnie Mouse. However, the park’s operators have insisted that the character ... is not a mouse. It is a cat with very large ears!
Japan Probe also links to several video clips of Japaneses news broadcasts on the topic.

All images originally appeared on Japan Probe.

UPDATE: Japan Probe finds fake zebras at the fake Disneyland, and more Chinese amusement parks ripping off just about everybody. And the AP reports that Shijingshan might be trying to clean up its act.

We'll see. If they can fake the Apple iPhone and get away with it, then why not everything else...

Nippon Freak: Move over Ultraman, Here Comes Norton Fighter!

Yeah I know it seems like I've been on a "Damn Japan is the shizznite" trip for a minute... But what's not to love about a place where they use "tokusatsu" to advertise for of all things, Norton Antivirus!"

Tokusatsu is a genre of programs on Japanese TV that are like live action "giant robo" hero shows. It usually involves several humans with secret alter-egos that form some sort of color-coded team to get the job done. Ultraman is a long-running series in Japan for example, and here in the US, we have the Power Rangers.

Well imagine my surprise to check out Gizmodo one day and find Norton doing an early 80's throwback tribute to those shows in Japan as a good parody and oh yeah, to move their software. I think I just may switch my anti-virus now, especially if the Akihabara Otaku Maid Princess is thrown in... NORTON PUNCH!!

/etc/bin/startup/save_us.y2j

There are only 3 things I watch on TV with any regularity... Anime, TLC/Discover, and WWE... And if you know me, you know I take wrestling seriously. It's all about the performance, and in-ring skills... But its about the mic-skills to back it up.

Five mat-jockeys come to mind when I think about "wrasslin'" today:  The Rock, John Cena, DX (HHH and HBK) and Y2J-Chris Jericho.   Well guess what.

RAW is Jericho once again!!  What next--  ...come on Rock...  come on, just gimme a "people's elbow" just for laughs one more time!!

They have EVERYTHING in Japan...

As much as I love Japan, there are some things I just don't care for there though.... But I have to admit, I miss ol' Razor Ramon's antics when I would turn on the TV (or just go outside) in Japan.
