Looks like Facebook is making it's push into JapanLand in earnest now...  

If you want the most attention as an internet site in Japan, you NEED a mobile presence.  Twitter didn't gain traction until they got with the program....  

Who would have thought that Twitter would have become such a huge hit in Japan – well it has and this is evident from the millions who mumble online. The reason why people are shocked at Twitter’s popularity in this country is because another social networking site already tried its luck there – Facebook.

It is no secret that Japanese are busy people, so it was no wonder that Twitter would become a hit. Twitter offered its Japanese service back in 2008 and since then has become popular with the younger generation. Then it was October 2009 when Twitter released its mobile version in Japan, this opened the micro-blogging site up to a much bigger market.

Twitter has become a huge part of Japanese life, being used on TV shows, in schools where students are taught how to tweet, and all the latest Celebes in the country are also tweeting. According to Yuri Kageyama from the Canadian Press, 16.3 percent of Internet users in Japan are said to be using Twitter – that’s compared to 9.8 percent in the U.S.

Twitter has managed to do what Facebook could not, but the micro-blogging site now has to battle Mixi. However, both social networking services are running neck-and-neck.

So now it seems Facebook is throwing its weight into the mobile space.  Can it work?  Well 6 months ago Twitted got with the Japanese Mobile Consortium and overhauled it's mobile site... 80% of Japanese twitter users are using a mobile to tweet, y'know.  Let's see if Facebook can hook it up...  They already support emoji BTW! ♥☀☁

IT’S OFFICIAL: Google’s Nexus One Phone Revealed (and I WANT IT!)

The Google Phone has been officially revealed. After weeks of leaks and revelations, the search giant is finally telling the story behind its self-branded smartphone, which Google calls a “Superphone.”

In its announcement, Google brought out Peter Chou, the CEO of HTC, the creator of the hardware of the Nexus One, to explain the genesis of the phone, as well as members of the Nexus One Google team.

- The specs match previous leaks. It’s a 3.7″ AMOLED display with a trackball.

- It comes with features such as a light sensor, GPS, and accelerometer. These are all features pioneered by Apple’s iPhone.

- It’s 130 grams in weight and 11.5 mm in width, about the width of a standard #2 pencil.

- The camera is 5MP with LED flash.

- The audio has received an upgrade. It has two microphones, one of which is used for noise cancellation.

- Customization is a key to the Nexus One. There are five home screens to cusotmize your interface.

- Google showed off some of its dynamic touchscreen features of the software.. For example, one of the wallpapers is a lake with leaves. When you touch it, it will ripple. It’s quite nifty, actually.

- They worked with the team at CoolIris to visualize photons on the Nexus One in a 3D environment. If you tap on an album, you’ll be able to quickly scan and load photos. You can also tip and dip photos based on your hand motions and the accelerometer.

- Every text field is voice enabled. Every time you speak, it will process your speech into text. It gets better and better the more and more you use it.

- You’ll be able to buy the phone at the Google web store, which was leaked last week. You can find it at Google.com/Phone.

J7TV: Testing Ustream iPhone App in Sakae, Nagoya, Japan

Technology is amazing....  

I was chatting with a viewer from Florida, USA via the Ustream chat app and you can't hear the other half of the conversation.  Sorry! 

He was wanting to know how to do live streams from his iPhone...   But the fact that guy was looking at my stream from Florida and I'm here iN Nagoya Japan... Buying a drink at Lawsons and walking down the street is just nuts...

Japan is Beautiful: 彩ちゃんの成人式の着物

There's a holiday in January called 成人式 or Coming-Of-Age Day.  People who will turn 20 in the next year all celebrate that fact  they'll be legally adults here in Japan soon on this day and wear fancy kimono (mostly girls and some guys) or sharp western suits (most guys)

This is my friend Ayaka here, who you'd never believe she's as young as she is-- She is as smart as she is cute, and is responsible for getting me interested in modern Japanese literature again, since she's an admitted bookworm.  She kind of reminds me of Yomiko Readman from Read or Die (Library Wars) but only my bros Tony and Brian will get that.

She put it on a little early so they can take the pictures at the hotel early and have a test fitting.  Her mom wore this kimono 28 years ago, she says.  Still in good condtion, a real family heirloom.  I wonder if she has a daughter, will she pass it down as well? 


Again, I think there are few more beautiful sights than a woman in kimono.  Reason #3 why Japan is my kind of place.

Treo PRO!!!

3 words...

I WANT ONE!!

I've owned a Treo ever since the first one came out in 2000. It was a HUGE Treo 300. 8 years and 3 models later there have been lots of changes... My current Treo 700 doesn't run Palm OS, it runs Windows Mobile 6 (well it came with 5.0, but I hacked the firmware a few months ago to run 6) Its a little bit smaller, a whole lot faster, and does more than even the PC I had in 2000.

When I bought that first smartphone, only techno-nerds like me would be caught dead with one... Now if you don't have something that can jump on You-Tube, browse eBay, take pictures and videos, and play MP3s... Oh and take phone calls too, you're officially out of the "electronicly trendy in-club". How do you like that, I've actually gotten in on the beginning of something trendy and cool... Unlike that time I tried to start a new trend by cutting my hair into a "Hi-top-triangle" back in 1988... Yeah those were the days.

So I guess this will be the next chapter in my treo book.
