Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduces iPhone 4, with FaceTime, Retina display, multitasking, 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, and HD video recording and editing. All on the world's thinnest smartphone.

Remember-- iPhones are the ONLY phones available here in Japan that work 100% with networks in the US, UK, AUS, and most other places in the world. I got people telling me to get an Android phone--and I would if I were still in the States. But all the features wouldn't work without me changing the ROM here in Japan...

BTW, I had 4 iPad sightings in the wild over the last 5 days here in Nagoya. Some dumb @$$ told me 3 weeks ago "Japanese would never buy that thing..." Even more suprising is how this oblivious fool has lived in Japan for 12 years and can't even order a cheeseburger in Japanese here... I'll say it again-- DUMB@$$!

光インタネットも付けてた。Got some FIBER in my diet...

Just got FTTH 光インタネット (that's fiber optic internet to the English speaking boys & girls) installed. Something that I can't even imagine having in the US in Atlanta right now.

Currenty I'm pulling these speeds thru the WiFi in my apartment... TO MY IPHONE. HA.

Mind you, this is from here in Japan, to Palo Alto, California USA.

When I was back home, I had to make do with a pokey DSL line that was on-again-off-again constantly whenever the wind blew. I think the greatest speed I got was a paltry 1 megabit burst with about 700kbps sustained... on a good day. Mind you I was paying $65/month for that. Ick...

That same amount of yen here in Japan gets me a FIBER OPTIC LINE that yields between 8-10 MEGABITS PER SECOND.
To illustrate this, imagine downloading a CD full of songs in MP3 format... about 200MB.
My old connection took about 1 hr to do it. If it didn't give up halfway.
This connection did it in the time it took me to write, format, and post this blog post-- 8 minutes. DAYUM!

So even though I'm in Japan, I'm about to be a HULU watching FOOL! oh and I still kept my Netflix account open so I can watch streaming movies that way too... Guess I'll watch Avatar for the 3921st time... Holla.

...It's important to understand who these people are. They're the same kind of people who said automobiles are just a fad, who said nobody wants to hear movie actors talk, who said graphical computing isn't real computing. They believe themselves to be enlightened skeptics. In fact, they're just the kind of people that always come out of the woodwork when something breathtakingly new emerges. Think about this--every conflict in the world right now, is a battle over resources. Mostly oil. This thing can run on biofuel, natural gas, even solar.


Imagine going to Home Depot, Kahma, or Wal-Mart and getting one of these. Imagine getting a small brick that powers your car... on a tank of natural biofuel... and not calculating miles per gallon, but miles per month on one fill up? How about something simple... like laptops and cellphones. just replace a small fuel cartridge every week. This tech is SCALEABLE.

iPad: You just don't know you want it yet, that's all...

Some people are very excited about the Fruity Computer Company's latest bit of kit that'll hit in 2 months, unveiled today...  Some are just so non-plussed...  Me?  Well I think like the iPod, and iPhone before it, it'll take about 1~2 generations to crush all takers...  Even quicker than that if ya think about it...  Here's my take.

• 75,000 people already have an iDevice...  which means NO LEARNING CURVE!!  This is the hardest thing to overcome, the User Experience.  No learning curve for these folks; the iPad is really just a bigger, more powerful iPod Touch when ya boil it down....

• 125,000 iTunes accounts with credit cards attached.  This doesn't count folks that use cash by getting iTunes cards in stores, or attached to PayPal (like mine).  This is what most people leave out...  The hardware is only 1/3 of the game...  This is supposed to be an entertainment device...  How would you get content on this thing if it was running Windows Mobile, Symbian, or even some flavor of Linux... TRUSTED content?  My 8 year-old niece knows what iTunes is...  "That's where mommy bought the Jay-Z CD!" (I used to say that about actual record stores...) I haven't bought a physical CD in TWO YEARS.  If not iTunes (or BOOTLEG , I just )With tie-ups with 5 major publishers, I guess my niece will be saying this about buying books too right?  

• 12,000,000,000 downloads.  From the iPhone store...  Worldwide.  The biggest electronic economy of scale right now.  'Nuff said.

Also some are kinda miffed that this thing isn't a big-@$$ed iPhone.  Meaning limited 3G connectivity, no camera...  Uhh, yeah, I already have an iPhone yo.  Why would I need a BIGGER one?  What I want is the ability for my iPhone, iPad, iMac, and MacBook Pro to TALK to each other...  WIRELESSLY!  That's what Bonjour is for...  F getting the version of the iPad with the 3G connection inside; ALL iPads have WiFi.  So does my (very jailbroken) iPhone...that I can convert to use as a WiFi Router with this thing...  The following is what life with my new iPad will be like maybe this time next year....

I wake up like always in the morning...  Put a pot of coffee on, walk over to my iPad that's been charging in it's dock.  I check the Japan Times first. (if they don't make an app soon, they'll miss the boat! ) Then the Atlanta Journal (hometown newspaper)  There's a pretty interesting story back home about the mayor-- I save the interview in the "dropbox"--an area that will funnel the same content in the form of a bookmark over to my iPhone, or MacBook; I wanna listen to this interview on the subway during my commute.  I check my email...  Pencil in some appointments, cancel others, then I throw the ipad in my bag...  Grab the iPhone, and my MacBook, and I'm out the door.

During my 25 minute train ride into work, I listen to the interview on my iPhone via bluetooth headphones, and I read some other articles in the AJC and the JT on it.  No need to pull an iPad out of my bag--everyone is standing shoulder to shoulder here and I can't even see my bag at my feet, let alone touch it!

Once in the office, I plug my macbook into the cinema display and the external hard drive on my desk.  I break out the iPad and plug it in as well...  Creating the ultimate portable creator's workstation.   It seems Wacom created an app that turns the iPad into a digitizer for your computer! Just like it's most expensive product, it has the capability of video overlay, so you can create custom icon sheets and keys.  But remember, it's capacitive multitouch--finger friendly, so that capacitive stylus is only needed when precision is a must!  Certainly has made my job as multimedia designer that much easier!  I plug my iphone into another dock on the desk and it begins to auto-update my podcasts.  I remember I was watching an episode of "Better Off Ted" on it yesterday and got interrupted, so I go onto iTunes on the Mac and pick up where I left off, using the 13" display of the macbook to see it, while working on the 21" Cinema Display.  

Lunch hits, and I bounce out the door, iPhone and iPad in hand to grab a coke and a smile...  While eating, surf the web on the iPad.  Since there's no WiFi in this place (Why?!) I put my iPhone into tether mode and connect the iPad via bluetooth.  A buddy of mine recommended a new book, so I click the link he put in his email-- He's gonna loan it to me for a read, cool!  He has a Kindle, and Amazon will let you loan books out to other Kindles (and devices that run the Kindle reader) for up to 2 weeks.  I download the book and start reading a few pages when I get a Skype call from home.  It's my brother calling from the States!  The new version of Skype can tell when you have both iPad and iPhone connected-- so it gives the option to open main app on the iPad, and use the iPhone's camera as a webcam!  (to all the pundits that are knocking the iPad's lack of camera) So I set it up this way and give my brother a little look around the cafe, then talk to him... I share a few pix off my iPhone with him, and tell him I'll be home in a month for a visit.

Back on the job, and this time I'm out in the field shooting video and snapping pix for an upcoming RANmagazine article.  Yeah, I made sure our mag would be ready for digital publishing already, so when you read the magazine in your iPad or whatever reader you use, multimedia content like video and audio will also be at your disposal.  I'm using an Eye-Fi SD card in my DSLR, but instead of beaming the shots and video back to my laptop; I have an app that beams them to either my iPhone or iPad.  I take the iPad with me because the bigger screen is easier to use with the updated version of Photoshop mobile (Adobe are you listening? ) Photos and video are automagically GPS tagged, given a filename that's easy to correspond to this story and ready to be shown, sent, or edited.  After taking some shots of the restaurant, I locate the head chef, and interview him on camera, then catch a train back across town.  Since its early afternoon, there aren't many people on the train, so I break out the ipad, and start making a few rough cuts in Adobe Premiere Mobile on the iPad.  

At my second stop, I am able to catch a WiFi signal and with my iPad using the iPhone camera in tether mode, I live stream a little bit of a gallery opening onto our website.  Being a mobile journalist is much easier than it used to be...

My day ends and I'm back at home...  Time to finally watch something good...But I don't watch TV anymore--and I haven't really for about 2 years now!  I fire up the iMac to find that Boxee has some new documentarys I wanna watch.  I break out the iPad once again-- this time to use it as a remote control for the Boxee app, and drone out... Just another day with tech...

So my take on the iPad is simple.  Remember Palm's attempt at a mobile companion device called the Folio? This is the bigger, simpler, smarter, faster, stronger, Apple-goodness-foritified take on that concept...  You want it... ESPECIALLY if you already have an iPod, iPhone, Mac, etc.  You just don't know it yet.

* Focused on the home and the classroom
* Shared by multiple family members [Um, sorry sis, get yer own!]
* Apple has explored electronic textbooks
* Has virtual keyboard
* Working with print media on text content
* Working with CBS/Disney on video content
* Working with EA on video game content
* Talking with Microsoft about search and maps
* Cable/TV providers resisting giving Apple “best” content (4-6 shows per channel), would rather it be “all” content
* $1000 price point “tested” again
* iTablet UI meant to be shareable; Apple has explored “sticky notes” as a way to share messages; facial recognition as a way of knowing who’s using it
* Apple planning web-based version of iTunes called iTunes.com
* “Buy” buttons would go wide on as many websites as possible

Meanwhile that tablet (if it comes out, wink-wink) will be rockin' OS 4.0, according to various sources.

Man... Don't think I'll save much money in 2010-- I already wanted an iMac, and now there's a rumor going around talking about a 21" touchscreen-enabled iMac... Now the iTablet will come to steal some leftover ¥ too...

Damn. Guess I need a 4th job.

IT’S OFFICIAL: Google’s Nexus One Phone Revealed (and I WANT IT!)

The Google Phone has been officially revealed. After weeks of leaks and revelations, the search giant is finally telling the story behind its self-branded smartphone, which Google calls a “Superphone.”

In its announcement, Google brought out Peter Chou, the CEO of HTC, the creator of the hardware of the Nexus One, to explain the genesis of the phone, as well as members of the Nexus One Google team.

- The specs match previous leaks. It’s a 3.7″ AMOLED display with a trackball.

- It comes with features such as a light sensor, GPS, and accelerometer. These are all features pioneered by Apple’s iPhone.

- It’s 130 grams in weight and 11.5 mm in width, about the width of a standard #2 pencil.

- The camera is 5MP with LED flash.

- The audio has received an upgrade. It has two microphones, one of which is used for noise cancellation.

- Customization is a key to the Nexus One. There are five home screens to cusotmize your interface.

- Google showed off some of its dynamic touchscreen features of the software.. For example, one of the wallpapers is a lake with leaves. When you touch it, it will ripple. It’s quite nifty, actually.

- They worked with the team at CoolIris to visualize photons on the Nexus One in a 3D environment. If you tap on an album, you’ll be able to quickly scan and load photos. You can also tip and dip photos based on your hand motions and the accelerometer.

- Every text field is voice enabled. Every time you speak, it will process your speech into text. It gets better and better the more and more you use it.

- You’ll be able to buy the phone at the Google web store, which was leaked last week. You can find it at Google.com/Phone.

I think this is the future of TV and general media consumption as we know it. In 10 years, people will no longer say "did you see the game on FOX yesterday?" They'll say,"I was on Fox.com and saw the game--Check out my blog to see some highlights if you didn't catch it."

With tools like Boxee and Miro allowing for one to easily aggregate web video and audio, and the price of flat-screen HDTVs down to reasonable levels-- we'll see this trend continue. Those TVs are just larger computer monitors, and all have some sort of connector to just plug a PC's video output into it like a VGA or HDMI port. I predict TVs to have some sort of thin client version of Boxee, Miro, Roku, or Orb in the next 3 years. I even look to Microsoft making a Windows Mediacenter TV running it on WinCE too. Of course this TV will have wifi in it, but it may also have a built in hard drive and of course USB ports to plug in cameras, thumbdrives, etc.

I'm not talking about having a PC in the TV--That's been done (I personally want a 27" iMac for that reason!) I'm talking about some sort of stripped-down OS that just runs audio/video from the net. I know it can be done too-- And this is where a company like Apple can do to TV what it did to the music industry (and also get its nascent Apple TV line in check)

Just as you can run iTunes on both macs and PCs, they should make Apple TV into an app, not just a piece of hardware. Build in Extended iTunes functionality. Build the app in HTML5... Then go to TV makers like LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, and more. Get them to put in a stipped down version of OSX (like the iPhone) and run it on that.

Got that? The TV comes with the ability to grab content off the web. A user like me could then just choose to stream the content, or download it locally and watch it later. Also if possible, I could auto-publish an RSS feed of what I'm watching so that my friends could check out that play in the Falcons game I was talking about yesterday.

Of course, I can do all this now (and I do-- with tools like Orb, Miro, and others) but it requires someone to be a tech-nerd (like me) and 3~5 pieces of equipment. This idea will gain traction when someone just has to go to Best Buy and get a new TV, take it home and plug it in, navigate to their bookmarked playlists on their social sites (youtube, facebook) or use the wi-fi to hook into another PC in the house with media and playlists on it-- and watch.

Vevo is just the start of this-- One can already start their broadcast with just a webcam and an internet connection. Look to subscribing to this content the way you turn on CNN when something happens in the world-- Citizen Journalism straight from the source.

By the way-- Vevo, like Hulu only works with US IP addresses; if you're like me and live outside the US, then you'll need to use a proxy to see it. I use Hotspot Shield for the Mac.

Kodak 1080p Zi8 pocket HD camcorder=Camera 2!

So I'm thinking, since i'll be getting the Lumix GH1 as a primary cam, I'll need another camera I can set up to give me wide shots, or to be the B-cam on shoots where I need 2 cameras... A flip-cam is a good deal at $160 a pop.. Shoots 1080p, and Kodak's version has external mic input and SD card slot for expanded memory... Y'all see where my mind is going yet?

Check out this cat from the UK, Adam Westbrook-- He's on my same brain wave here I think.  His video review is below, but also visit his site, adamwestbrook.wordpress.com, where he talked about the capabilities this new class of camera brings.  Folks, this is broadcast quality 1080p HD video in 3.2 ounces, no bigger than your kid's Gameboy.  I remember 12 years ago working at WGNX (now WGCL) in Atlanta and they made a big deal out of buying a few cameras that were $30,000 each to shoot HD.  Even 3 years ago I purchased a camera (well Comcast did for my department anyway) that shot 720p at 60fps and it was about $4000.  Amazing.  Just like musicians and sound engineers have studios that fit in a suitcase, I can actually have an HD ready kit that can shoot and stream LIVE via the internet using tools like Ustream.tv or LiveStream.tv now; forget the ENG trucks and portable switchers, and such. 

Looks like I'll be all set with the plans I have for this coming summer here in Japan... Stay Tuned...

J7 Blogcast: Live and Random via TwitCam.

I'm playing with a new toy called Twitcam here.  With this service, I can use my twitter account (@starrwulfe) to broadcast live streams to the twitter world and then archive them later.  So what's different about this vs. Qik?  Live twitter-powered chat.  Others can tweet the broadcast live and leave messages, or in my case, ask me questions about things.  So if you have a twitter account and webcam, try it out for a spell.  It didn't work too bad IMHO, but it could have been shorter...  Such is live TV--err internet video...
